Some Codebits updates

Published 3 years ago, in Blog, Web

SAPO Codebits is almost here, and they’ve done a good job keeping people excited. They have a Twitter page, which keeps you on top of the latest news, and they’ve been hosting a little quiz event on their blog. So far I’ve only solved the first one, lack of time (and patience!) have kept me from the others.

Some interesting speakers who are already confirmed include Peter Svensson from the Dojo Javascript Toolkit team (although I’m still sad that no one is showing some JQuery loving – yet) and Jan Lehnardt, maker of contributor for CouchDB. Also interesting is the presence of Andrew “Bunnie” Huang, one of the key players in the making of the Chumby multimedia player.

In other news, you can already check out the probable skill distribution of everyone taking part in the event. PHP, Javascript and CSS are obviously the best represented skills, and I’m sad the Ruby population doesn’t exceed the 2.6%. Guess I’ll have to work my way around the crowd!

Wordle, a new take on tag clouds

Published 3 years ago, in Blog, Web

I’ve just discovered Wordle, a Java based “toy” which builds tag clouds for some text, RSS Feed or del.icio.us of your choosing. Not just tag clouds though, beautiful ones at that. You can mess with the font, the colors, the way the words are displayed and even cut out select words.

I could definitely see this tool being put too good use, but alas, it’s implementation is not as practical as one would hope: there is no API (that I know of) for automatically generating Wordle clouds, and converting it to a useful format is no walk in the park (I had to print and then use “Save as PDF”, then go to Photoshop and save it as an image).

Anyway, here is a Wordle for this blog’s RSS feed:

Web Development Frameworks

Published 3 years ago, in Blog, Web

Yeah, they’re all the rage nowadays. Ruby on Rails, Django, CakePHP, among many others. Even though these frameworks have different names, languages and approaches, they all share a common mindset: to make your web development faster and easier. (…) more after the jump ›

After Clã, it’s now time for Deolinda, an upcoming portuguese band, to play at the Teatro Aveirense, in Aveiro. It’s happening October 17, and of course I already have front-line tickets.

Safari 4 and the new Web

Published 3 years ago, in Blog, Web

The other day I downloaded version 4 of Apple Safari, available to developers through the Apple Developer Connection website. Among claims of huge speed bumps and a new Javascript interpreter, I got curious about a new option present in the File menu: Save as Web Application
